LAFIA
Nigeria's Unified Health Identity Platform
Every year in Nigeria, patients die not from a lack of treatment — but from a lack of information. Doctors prescribe drugs patients are allergic to. Hospitals open duplicate folders for the same patient. Referrals arrive without context. LAFIA changes this.
Built on the National Identification Number (NIN) as its backbone, LAFIA gives every Nigerian a permanent, portable, and secure medical record that travels with them across every hospital, clinic, and emergency room — for life.
The Core Problem
Nigeria has approximately 220 million people. Every one of them will interact with a hospital at some point in their life. But when they do, that hospital has no access to their prior medical history, allergies, surgical records, or chronic conditions — information that could prevent mistakes, save time, and save lives.
At LASUTH — one of Nigeria's foremost teaching hospitals — a patient who already had a registered hospital folder had a second folder accidentally opened. Result: a duplicate registration fee of ₦10,000 charged to an unsuspecting patient. This is not a bug. It is the system working exactly as designed.
Paper-based folders get lost. Folders get duplicated. Patients repeat full medical histories at every new hospital. Critical tests go unmissed because a prior result exists in a cabinet across town. Unconscious patients cannot speak, and their allergies remain unknown. This is not edge case — it is daily reality.
The Vision
Any registered doctor or nurse — at any hospital in Nigeria — can pull up a patient's full medical history in seconds.
No folders. No repeated questioning. No fatal guesswork. No duplicate registrations. One identity. One record. Accessible anywhere. Accountable always.
Core Features
🏥 Unified Health Record
Every patient gets a single, permanent health profile anchored to their NIN. Allergies, chronic conditions, surgical history, vaccinations, and vital sign trends — all accessible to any authorised doctor instantly.
🏨 Lab & Imaging Integration
MRI scans, X-rays, blood tests, and diagnostic results upload directly to the patient's record. No more lost reports. No more repeated testing. Trend graphs replace individual numbers.
🆘 Emergency Protocol
When a patient is unconscious: fingerprint scanner, physical card, QR code, or family contact — multiple identity methods ensure the patient's blood type, allergies, and current medications are visible immediately. No single point of failure.
🔐 Audit Trail & Accountability
Every access to a patient record is logged. Every rendered page is invisibly watermarked with metadata. If a screenshot is leaked, it traces back to the exact account that accessed it.
👶 Birth Registration & Family Health Tree
At the moment of birth, the delivering doctor logs the event to the mother's record. The newborn gets a temporary Lafia ID. When NIN is registered, it links seamlessly. A multi-generational health graph grows over time.
📊 Public Health Surveillance
When every hospital logs diagnoses in real time, Lafia detects disease clusters before they spread. NCDC receives automated alerts with anonymised data. Outbreaks are caught when intervention is still possible.

Development Roadmap
Real-World Impact
Case Study 1: The Tumour Nobody Knew About
A patient arrives with extremely elevated blood sugar. Without any prior records available, doctors treat the numbers in front of them. Hours pass. The sugar level refuses to come down.
What they didn't know: Three years earlier, the patient had a brain scan at a different hospital identifying a pituitary tumour — the part of the brain that regulates hormone production. That scan existed only in a folder at another hospital.
With LAFIA: The scan would be visible in 10 seconds. The connection between the tumour and the sugar spike would be made immediately. The surgery window would stay open.
Case Study 2: The Allergy That Was Already Known
A woman arrives at an emergency room unconscious after a road accident. Under time pressure, a broad-spectrum antibiotic is administered — standard trauma protocol.
She goes into anaphylactic shock. The emergency team spends 40 minutes managing a drug reaction instead of her actual injuries. Unknown to them: she had been given the same antibiotic years ago and experienced documented severe anaphylaxis.
With LAFIA: Her allergy — flagged at severity level SEVERE — would be the first thing visible when her NIN was entered. The antibiotic would never be administered.
Business Model & Sustainability
LAFIA is and will remain completely free for all Nigerian citizens. Revenue comes from four streams:
| Revenue Stream | Model |
|---|---|
| B2B SaaS | Monthly subscription from private hospitals and clinics, tiered by staff and volume |
| Government Licensing | White-label deal with NHIA or FMOH for national deployment |
| Population Health Data | Anonymised, aggregated health trends sold to pharma, insurers, and researchers |
| Patient Premium Tier | Optional subscription from individuals for enhanced features |
Why This Matters Now
In January 2026, the death of a 21-month-old at a Lagos hospital sparked the most significant public debate on patient safety Nigeria has seen in years. The Governor ordered a probe. The Medical and Dental Council opened an investigation. Prominent voices called for systemic reform.
The conversation is not going away. Nigerians are demanding accountability from their healthcare system. LAFIA is the infrastructure that makes accountability possible — not through litigation after the fact, but through transparency and traceable records from the very first moment of care.
The technology exists. The NIN infrastructure exists. The regulatory framework exists. What has been missing is someone willing to build the layer that connects all of it — and build it with accountability at its core.
